Lyrics:

I'm a phoenix in the water
A fish that's learned to fly
And I've always been a daughter
But feathers are meant for the sky
And so I'm wishing, wishing further,
For the excitement to arrive
It's just I'd rather be causing the chaos
Than laying at the sharp end of this knife

With every small disaster
I'll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real

'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you're alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It's not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we're together, does it matter where we go?
Home home home home

So when I'm ready to be bolder,
And my cuts have healed with time
Comfort will rest on my shoulder
And I'll bury my future behind
I'll always keep you with me
You'll be always on my mind
But there's a shining in the shadows
I'll never know unless I try

With every small disaster
I'll let the waters still
Take me away to some place real

'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you're alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It's not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we're together, does it matter where we go?
Home home home home home home home home

'Cause they say home is where your heart is set in stone
Is where you go when you're alone
Is where you go to rest your bones
It's not just where you lay your head
It's not just where you make your bed
As long as we're together, does it matter where we go?

Synopsis:

The song is a narrative about what is happening in the song. The video follows a young girl who is mugged and the start of the video. Then has to find her own way across the American countryside via lifts and walking to get to the city.

Lyric analysis:

The lyrics could be interpreted as meaning, she is away from the person she loves and is feeling home sick. However she is actually home sick from the person than her actual home. Therefore being with the person she loves is her 'home'. When she is not with this person she does not feel herself, only when she is with him she feels relaxed.

Timeline:

0-0:30

The video starts with no music, the first shot pans from a girls shoes up to establish the location. A close then shows her face, we then hear a man say 'oh look at her'. An over the shoulder shot is then used to show the men surrounding her, as another man says 'what's in the bag?'. A mid shot shows the girl being pushed into a fence, while a close up of the ground shows then men grab her belongings that had fallen from her bag. A long shot then shows the men getting into her car and driving off.

0.54-1.25

The video then cuts to the tittle 'Home', this suggest that the video is a narrative. A close up shot shows the girl walking down a road, she then begins to sing and she continues to walk. The bleak landscape to shown through a long shot. It then cuts to a high angle shot of the girl walking into a store/ service station, then a mid shot showing the girl put a pack of crisp into her jacket and walk out. The video then goes back to a side profile of the girl eating the crisp while walking back down the road.

1.25-1.44

An over the shoulder shot shows the girl walking into a motel, then cuts to a high angle shot of her lying on the bed. The video then jumps back to the day, by a long shot of her outside by a phone box. The girl begins to walk on the road again (long shot). A point of view shot shows the girl getting into a truck and then driving off (long shot).

1.44-2.19

The video then switches between a mid shot of the girl lying on a bed sing to a long shot of her getting out of the truck and waving goodbye.

2.19-2.47

A mid shot shows her washing up in what looks like a restaurant. Then cuts to a mid shot of her being given a plate of food which looks disgusting (extreme close up). The location then switches to her looking at herself in the mirror, then a close up of her face. The location then switches again to a point of view shot of the girl washing somebodies car. A montage is then used to show shots of the landscape.

2.47-3.17

A mid shot then shows her in the back of a truck driving through the countryside, another montage of shot help establish her travelling from car to car. A mid shot then shows the girl walking into a music shop and buying a guitar. A close up of her watch tells the audience that she had to use everything she had to buy the guitar.

3.17-3.43

The video then cuts to a number of long shots of her walking down the street at night as the music increases. A mid shot then shows her playing the guitar on a street bench, and the sound of money dropping into her guitar case.

3.43-4.15

It then cuts between a mid shot of the girl singing while sat on a pool table in a bar, to the begin where she is running after her stolen car.

Mise-en-scene:

Costume

The singer who is the main character in the music video is wearing as they are very mix and match and she is wearing old fashioned shoes. This helps to establish the genre of the some , which is indie soul.

Lighting

The lighting in the video is very realist to show the narrative of the video. Also the use of light and dark help to establish night and day, to show that the video is over a period of time.

Setting

The video has a number of different locations to show how she is travelling across the countryside to get to the city.

Location 1: countryside

Location 2: mini mart

Location 3: Motel

Location 4: Truck

Location 5: Music store

Location 6: City

Location 7: Bar

Acting

Throughout the video Gabrielle Aplin plays a young girl who has everything taken away from her and has to find her own way to the city. She is serious throughout which help to bring the narrative of the video to life.

Editing:

The video is very cleverly editing through the use of lighting to help establish a new day. Also as the music builds the number of shots increase to keep up with the pace of the song. A montage is used to show Gabrielle travelling across the country and speed up time to be able to get the story in.

Focus group:

I showed the music video to my focus group and they mostly said the video would be aimed at teenagers aged between 15-25. Gabrielle Aplin could be seen as an inspiration in this video as she is becoming her own person and having to fend for herself.
